Job Description: Dean of School Culture, Member of Leadership Team

The Dean of Discipline is a critical stakeholder in driving our efforts to ensure college readiness within four years for all students. S/he sits on the school’s Leadership Team along with the School Leader, Director of College Placement, and Director of Finance and Operations. S/he is responsible for implementing the schoolwide plan for creating a culture built on positive, academic, kind and forward-thinking behavior among all students. S/he is also chiefly responsible for administering disciplinary actions. The Dean not only reinforces our academic and behavioral expectations for students, but also embodies and models expectations consistently. The Dean of School Culture at People’s Prep collaborates with other Deans and School Leaders to ensure that our school is peaceful and that student attendance, punctuality and a focus on high academic achievement never falter. Through data management and tracking, incentive systems, and facility and grounds monitoring this People’s Prep Dean knows every student, can forecast distractions, and ensures that students proactively make the right choices. The Dean of School Culture will work with students providing them with the ongoing mentorship and direction they require to successfully navigate their educational experience.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred

  • Minimum three years of urban school-based experience, preferably classroom or mental health experience

  • A demonstrated commitment to closing the achievement gap

  • Demonstrated ability to coach or lead adults in the workplace

  • Spanish language skills preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience communicating with diverse audiences

  • Commitment to and skilled in collecting, interpreting and using student and school-level data to make decisions regarding programming

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to continue to develop deficits in self and others for the benefit of students, families and team

  • Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Openness to feedback and willingness to take personal responsibility

  • Proven willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure student success and safety

  • A clear and unwavering commitment to our mission and core values

Responsibilities:

  • Model and exemplify all school core values including a growth mindset and personal excellence at all times.

  • Closely collaborate with school leaders to maintain a positive, safe and college-going school culture.

  • Ensure the consistent and fair administration of school policies regarding student conduct and discipline.

  • Work with school leaders to retain all, but especially novice teachers, by implementing and maintaining necessary additional classroom supports that ensure a focus on teaching and learning.

  • Cooperate with instructional and guidance teams to implement student supports and interventions.

  • Plan and lead professional development sessions focused on classroom and school-based interventions that build student’s positive character traits, sense of personal and shared responsibility, and ability to self-reflect.

  • Work and communicate effectively with families from diverse backgrounds.

  • Focus on results and create student discipline reports based on quantitative data to be shared with school leaders.

  • Be available via phone and/or email throughout the evening and weekend to communicate with families and school leaders.

  • Attend school events like awards ceremonies, enrollment nights, school productions, and Parent Teacher Conferences.

  • Team with other 12-month employees to complete Home Visits for all incoming students.

  • Serve as the Lead HIB investigator, complete all HIB paperwork in a timely manner, and assist with the submission of state reports.

  • Coordinate and run effective in-school suspension rooms to ensure an effective discipline program.

  • Work closely with the Attendance Officer to ensure that students are attending school regularly.

  • Supervise extracurricular activities like basketball games and other after school sports.

  • Oversee the cafeteria to monitor student behavior and work closely with staff to maintain effective routines and practices.

  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned by the School Leaders in a timely manner.
