Founded in 2011, Roseville Community Charter School was created to provide a high quality, college preparatory education to students in the Roseville neighborhood of Newark, NJ. Our mission is to prepare every student for academic excellence while providing a warm, nurturing environment in which all children are supported and thrive. Position: Literacy Coach
About the Opportunity
The Literacy Coach will be responsible for coaching teachers to implement innovative strategies thatboost student literacy achievement. The Literacy Coach will play a chief role in implementing and
revising the English language arts curriculum, and coordinating and administering literacy assessments
.
Responsibilities:
- Exemplify, advocate and operationalize the mission, vision and core values of the school
- Teach and reinforce all school-wide expectations, systems, and routines
- Provide comprehensive instructional coaching in literacy
- Create detailed coaching plans, which include focused goals and measures of success, to drive learning cycles.
- Observe teachers and provide specific strategies for improved instructional delivery
- Work closely with Director of Curriculum and Instruction to create and improve aligned curriculum resources, professional development and materials support teachers
- Support teachers’ achievement of goals by using coaching strategies that gradually release responsibility for implementing instructional practices to the teacher (for example, co-planning,modeling, co-teaching, side-by-side coaching, and observing).
- Consistently analyze teacher practice through ongoing classroom observations, data analysis, and examination of student work.
- Serve as an expert in national trends and best practices in literacy curriculum development and instructional strategies for historically underachieving students
- Facilitate small group intervention and instruction for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students
- Serve as a coach to teachers by providing expert advice on improving and enhancing individual lessons and units based on ongoing. This will include, but is not limited to:
- Reviewing lesson plans, unit plans, and assessments
- Understanding scope and sequence models
- Observing classroom instruction and offering comprehensive analysis and feedback
- Providing instructional strategy best practice training, as needed
- Supporting the development of curriculum, using the backward design model and advising scope and sequence based on essential content knowledge that addresses the Common Core Standards
- Cultivating a standards-based, data and results-oriented culture
Qualifications and Certifications
- New Jersey Reading Specialist certification
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
- Firm belief in the ability of all students to achieve at high levels, and high expectations for low-income children to become college ready and attend selective universities
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Minimum of 5 years teaching experience
- Previous elementary literacy coaching experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to build and support teams
- Experience teaching in an urban environment, with demonstrated quantifiable and objective student performance gains that surpass state or local averages
- Self-reflective and analytical problem solver
- Openness to feedback, willingness to take personal responsibility, and a desire to learn from others
- Unwavering in pursuit of excellence even in the face of difficult opposition and challenges
